Nature is Calling: Welsh Nature Week Events

Welsh Nature Week is in full swing, and there is no shortage of exciting events scheduled across the country. From thrilling pond-dipping adventures to educational wildlife rambles, these activities offer a unique opportunity to connect with Wales’ ecosystems and the creatures that call them home. No matter your location, you can find something to suit, and for those who can’t travel too far, there is even a webinar or two timetabled. 1. Mini-beast Safari at Cilgeran (26th July)

Delight in a mini-beast safari at Cilgeran with the Wildlife Trust of South & West Wales. Every Wednesday morning during the school holidays, kids can embark on an exciting safari around the nature reserve. Join in the hunt for mini-beasts in the leaf litter and meadow while learning about their habitats and food chains. The safari takes place from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm and costs £4 per child (booking recommended).

2. Treasure Our Pollinators at Friars Walk Newport (26th July)

Join the Greening Maindee team, Newport City Council, and Gwent Wildlife Trust in the heart of Newport on Wednesday, 26th July. Treasure our Pollinators offers an opportunity to appreciate the vital role of pollinators in our ecosystems. Explore the self-guided nature trail with spotter sheets, participate in the pollinator-friendly plant sale, and get creative making lavender bags. 3. Bugs, Bees, and Birds Walk with Gavin Vella – Pontypool (27th July)

Join naturalist Gavin Vella for an exciting Bugs, Bees, and Birds walk at Llandegfedd Lake Reservoir on Thursday, 27th July. The event, hosted by Torfaen County Borough Council, offers sessions in both the morning and afternoon. Discover the fascinating world of insects, bees, and avian life amidst the scenic beauty of the reservoir. Free booking here.

4. Ystrad Fawr Wildlife Ramble (28th July)

Experience the beauty of Ystradfawr Nature Reserve in Welsh Nature Week with a wildlife ramble organized by WTSWW-Brecknock. The 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm walk offers a loop around the main tracks and possibly exploration of the fields. Keep an eye out for butterflies during the walk as they may even run a “Big Butterfly Count”. The meeting point is Ysgol Golwg y Cwm school car park, and the walk covers approximately 2 miles over uneven ground. Booking recommended.

5. Woodland Creative Play Sessions at Craig Gwladus Woods (28th July)

On Friday, 28th July, Craig Gwladus Woods in Neath Port Talbot becomes the backdrop for a delightful 2-hour woodland creative play workshop. Children, parents, and carers can get hands-on with imaginative activities such as woodland art, banner making, clay face sculpting, den building, and games. Each week’s theme will bring new adventures and discoveries. The cost ranges from £5 to £8, and refreshments will be provided. Book here.

6. Dawn Dolphin Watch in Cardigan Bay (29th July)

Don’t miss the chance to witness the beauty of Cardigan Bay at sunrise during the Dawn Dolphin Watch. From 7 am to 9 am, the Cardigan Bay Marine Wildlife Centre’s marine conservation team will guide you in spotting marine mammals, seabirds, and summer visitors to Welsh waters. Gain valuable insights into bottlenose dolphins and the vital marine conservation work carried out to protect these magnificent creatures. Booking essential.

7. Mammal Walk at Caswell Bay (29th July)

Explore the enchanting woodlands of Caswell Bay with expert mustelid guide, Josie Bridges. This exciting mammal walk, organized by the Wildlife Trust of South & West Wales Swansea group, offers a chance to learn about these elusive creatures and search for signs of badgers, foxes, and perhaps even polecats! The event takes place on Saturday, 29th July, from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm. Book here.
